R5.5 million project to ensure South Africa’s story is available in pictures to world publishing markets ahead of 2010 World Cup focus.
africanpictures.net, as part of Africa Media Online(AMO) (Pty) Ltd, is at the heart of an effort to ensure that when the world media turns their attention to South Africa ahead of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, they can find the pictures to tell the nation’s story.
Known as the African Image Pipeline (AIP), the project has been made possible with 70% grant funding from the European Union through Gijima KZN, an initiative of the Department of Economic Development in South Africa.
The AIP enables AMO to: train photo entrepreneurs from historically
disadvantaged backgrounds; digitise additional images; upgrade their
online media library and sales management system including
introducing a multi-language search facility; and provide quality
images to global audiences.
AMO makes African heritage and media digital collections accessible
to global art, media and product audiences. The company believes that
the long term ownership of African commercial and heritage
collections must remain in Africa with revenue returning to those to
whom the collections belong. While others may have access to them
(both locally and internationally) they need to be preserved in
Africa for future generations. In this way, it will be Africans that
tell Africa's story.

Behind the scenes at a Summer Solstice shoot this year, by Bill Bon
Last week Getty Images contributing photographers as well as art directors, models and crews donated their time to participate in the third annual Summer Solstice creative photo shoots in cities across America, to benefit the Compassionate Eye Foundation.
Established by Getty Images contributing photographer, Robert Kent, the organization seeks to improve education, health care and economic opportunities in developing countries.
By donating royalties from the licensing of imagery captured during Summer Solstice shoots through Getty Images' Web site, the photographers help generate a steady source of funding for the Compassionate Eye Foundation's philanthropic projects. To date, the foundation has built an elementary school in Tuixoquel, Guatemala and is heading several other successful projects including a scholarship fund, a women's health group and a program that educates rural teenagers.
For more information on the Compassionate Eye Foundation's partnership with Getty Images and to view imagery captured during past Summer Solstice shoots, visit: www.gettyimages.com/cef.
Imagery from last week's shoots will become available on the Getty Images Web site in the coming weeks.

CEPIC Convention 2008 - photo: Paul Brown
The tide is starting to turn from in-house to outsourced keywording if the recent CEPIC convention is anything to go by, says Keedup managing director Kevin Townsend.
“Between the PACA convention last October and CEPIC this month (June) there has been a noticeable change in the number of companies interested in the outsourcing message. That same pattern was repeated in talks with a series of British photo libraries after the convention.”
Mr Townsend put the change down to two main factors – constantly changing keywording standards and the growth of digital imagery.
“Because companies such as Getty, Corbis and Jupiter are so influential in the market you have to stay up with the play as their standards change. Many photo libraries simply don’t generate enough images to warrant keeping up to speed with what is required. We heard from a number of companies at CEPIC who were complaining that they found the whole thing was too difficult to keep up with, and who can blame them.
“It’s not just a matter of paying attention to the changes, staff have to be trained and re-trained, software has to be altered. All of that adds greatly to the cost as well as the angst.”
As the number of images being produced in the digital age continued to grow, the problem of managing workload was getting much harder.
“You would think that more images would enable in-house teams to flourish. In some cases that’s true, but for many libraries the problem is dealing with production spikes.”
Bigger volumes of images made such spikes proportionally bigger and the feast and famine cycle added greater stress for photo library managers.
“The choice is to always get images out quickly, but suffer from overstaffing to achieve that, or to keep staffing at reasonable levels but be unable to cope when the pressure goes on.
“Often keywording is being done by people who would be better off spending their time selling images, recruiting photographers or editing production.”
Mr Townsend said the problems for editorial photo libraries were even worse, and some companies which had been adamant a year ago that their keywording would always be done in-house were now considering making the move.
The problems of production spikes were multiplied several times over because of the very high volumes amongst celebrity and news photo agencies, plus they had the problem that their images need to be out in the market place within hours.
“We know very well from our own experience that managing keywording operations around the clock isn’t easy or cheap. But if you are serving a global market your images need to be on that market keyworded and captioned and ready to go. Waiting around for the day staff to come in means you will be that much behind the competition.”
ITN Source has signed a six figure global deal with Al Jazeera giving the network access to over 800,000 hours of video content for use in its programming.
Al Jazeera and independent production companies making programmes for the network now have unlimited access to all footage libraries represented by ITN Source including the Granada, ITN, Reuters, Channel 4 and British Pathe collections as well as a growing catalogue of HD stock footage. The licence agreement covers unlimited global transmissions on the Al Jazeera Network, their associated carriers and online outlets including Al Jazeera’s YouTube pages for a period of 5 years.
Neil Meadows, Sales Director of ITN Source said: “ITN Source has worked closely with Al Jazeera to deliver a flexible and transparent deal that brings first rate video content including a wealth of global and historical Middle East footage. This agreement will give Al Jazeera and production companies working with them priority service and simple clearances.”
Tony Burman, Managing Director of AJE from Al Jazeera Europe said: “This deal helps us plan and budget our productions costs more effectively. ITN Source has an impressive collection of editorial led video content that spans over three centuries and will add great value to our programming”.
Blend Images Names James Doherty as Senior Editor
Doherty joins the Editing Team to focus on Artist Recruitment, Content, Art Direction, and Editing
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Blend Images, the world’s leading multiethnic stock photography agency, today announced that James Doherty has been appointed to the position of Senior Editor.
In this role, Doherty will be responsible for artist recruitment, content art direction, and editing for the Blend collection. He will be based on the East Coast and report to Sarah Fix, Creative Director at Blend Images.
Doherty has more than 13 years of experience in the stock photography business. Most recently, as a Photography Editor at Getty Images, he edited and maintained the Getty house collections, while also providing art direction to contributing photographers. Previously, he was with the Stock Market Photo Agency where he held positions as Senior Photo Researcher and Account Executive.
“As we develop the Blend collection, it’s important that we continue to generate the very best lifestyle and business imagery in the industry,” said Rick Becker-Leckrone, CEO of Blend Images. “Jim’s knowledge and experience in the industry, and the longstanding relationships he has with photographers, will be valuable as we expand the collection to include rights-managed imagery, and develop the world’s first ethnically diverse online stock content portal, blendimages.com.”
ACAP (Automated Content Access Protocol) and the PLUS Coalition (Picture Licensing Universal System) have just announced that ACAP has adopted the PLUS image licensing standards to allow internet search engines to recognize image rights information.
The integration of the PLUS standards within ACAP is a milestone for both organizations, and will allow image creators, distributors, users, museums, libraries and educational institutions to more easily identify, access and understand rights information associated with images.
ACAP, the new, global, non-proprietary, machine-readable protocol that enables publishers to control how their online content is re-used, is to adopt semantics of the Picture Licensing Universal System (PLUS). The PLUS standards simplify and facilitate the communication and management of image rights, providing for increased automation and machine readable image licenses.
ACAP will use the PLUS License Data Format and PLUS Media matrix standards to supplement the existing ACAP vocabulary for communicating license-related information in a machine-readable form to web crawlers and other automated devices that use web content. ACAP has previously concentrated on text-based web resources, and its adoption of PLUS semantics is part of a planned extension of ACAP to meet publisher requirements to communicate more precise terms for use of photographic and other media resources by web crawlers.
Project Director Mark Bide said: "PLUS is a perfect fit for ACAP. We have said from the start that ACAP is not about re-inventing the wheel but about filling in the missing pieces of jigsaw to allow all content providers to express, in a machine-readable way, how they wish their content, whether that be pictures, music, film or the written word, to be re-used in the online environment."
Jeff Sedlik, President and CEO of the PLUS Coallition said: "ACAP has made astounding progress in a very brief period. By adopting the PLUS standards, ACAP will now expand beyond textual content to the communication of image rights. The close collaboration between ACAP and PLUS will benefit everyone involved in creating, distributing, using and preserving images."

Balantine Ad
GreenLight, Corbis' rebranded Rights Service, has recently announced its rights and music clearances work for advertising campaigns for leading brands such as Old Spice, Ballantine’s (above) and American Family Insurance.
It has also signed several licensing agreements on behalf of the Steve McQueen estate.
GreenLight has recently worked with leading advertisings agencies in North America, Europe and Asia including Weiden + Kennedy, Publicis, Element 79, and Y&R. The announcement was made at Cannes Lions 2008, the 55th International Advertising Festival, held June 15-21 in Cannes, France.
Weiden + Kennedy of Portland, Oregon turned to GreenLight to help clear a photograph of actress Kim Novak to be used in a print ad for Old Spice deodorant. After W+K’s creatives stumbled across the photo in a book of historical celebrity images, GreenLight was able to locate and secure the appropriate copyright so that the advertisement could feature the image of the famous actress along with the memorable tag-line “Blondes Prefer Gentlemen.” The ad was initially intended to run just once, but it drew such a positive response that Old Spice extended the campaign.
“We knew that the image we discovered would be perfect for our campaign, and GreenLight really came through in quickly handling the clearances for us,” said Heather Smith Harvey, Art Buyer, Weiden + Kennedy. “Their involvement helped us create a really fun ad that connected with consumers.”
GreenLight also worked on behalf of Publicis UK to clear the use of images of John McEnroe, Steve McQueen and other iconic personalities to appear in Ballantine’s Whisky advertisements in Spain and Portugal.
The Intellectual Property service firm, signed ligensing agreements on behalf of the Steve McQueen estate for the production, marketing and sale of limited edition motorcycles, racing gear and other apparel by companies including Métisse-Motorcycles, Johnson Motors, a2z Racer Gear, Toys McCoy and Triumph Motorcycles.
“We free up creatives to spend more time and energy on developing great concepts,” said Mark Sherman, Senior Vice President and Head of GreenLight. “Our mission is to provide airtight clearances quickly and cost-effectively to help great advertising ideas fly.”

"We decided to showcase this current collection in paper format as we remain excited about how well our images work in print and we want to confirm to any designer that they can be bold in using our imagery large and out loud." said Christina Vaughan, Image Source Founder and Chief Executive Officer.
Image Source launches “Sneak Preview” – portraits for advertising and design with attitude and authenticity

The uniqueness of World Portraits is that every time a photo is sold, the sitter receives a royalty and can share in the profits.
The new 54 page booklet is innovative in its touch, feel and creative format and is set to inspire designers worldwide. Working closely with Hamburg based designers, elbstern.com, Image Source wanted to draw in modern media techniques combined with traditional artisan skills, hence the unusual cover of 4 colour print coldfoil on 350 gram Profigloss paper stock. Internally, showcasing the contrasting collections of raw World Portraits against the highly polished Celebrity styled portraiture are two distinct paper stocks of 150grm Taurus Offset white naturepaper and150 g/gm Profigloss glossy white.

PhotoShelter, with co-sponsors Nikon, Adorama Camera and Shoot Digital are planning an event to on 20 July 2008 aimed at replenishing the global stock photo supply in areas of the greatest buyer demand. Registration for Shoot! The Day is open.
PhotoShelter have also launched The School of Stock , a new online guide to understanding what stock photo buyers' want and how they want it - directly from the minds of leading image buyers and successful photographers.
These announcements are a direct response to insights from a recent stock photography industry survey conducted by PhotoShelter that captured the impressions of over 700 photo buyers, editors and art directors. The survey confirmed the stock photo supply is outdated and has run dry in key, often-used areas.
Register for Shoot! The Day at www.shoottheday.com.

PhotoShelter Industry Survey: Buyers Are Bored
Through its industry survey, PhotoShelter uncovered stock photo buyer discontent, with:
nearly 75% of respondents indicating they have seen all the content currently available through major channels.
Buyers indicated the worst categories in stock photography, in terms of quality and breadth of available imagery, were:
- healthcare (87.7%),
- multicultural and diversity lifestyle (86.1%),
- senior citizens lifestyle (85.6%) and,
- consumer technology and products (84.4%).
The full results are available at the School of Stock (http://blog.photoshelter.com/school).
With these new initiatives, PhotoShelter is mobilizing the global community of photographers to address buyers' most critical needs.
"It's surprising to see such a huge communication gap between two sides of an industry that depend on each other to succeed. Buyers are searching in frustration for fresh images, while thousands of talented photographers worldwide continue to invest time and resources into shooting for stock without any awareness of buyers' most pressing needs," said Allen Murabayashi, CEO of PhotoShelter. "Starting today, PhotoShelter is closing the gap. We're creating an unprecedented dialogue between photographers and image buyers. We're then empowering photographers with access to new information to create an evolving pipeline of imagery that is precisely attuned to customer demand. And, we're all going to have some fun together while we do it."
Shoot! The Day: July 20, 2008
Register at www.shoottheday.com.
On Shoot! The Day, photographers worldwide are invited to help replenish the current supply of stock images in five key categories -active seniors, youth culture, family and kids lifestyle, business settings and still life. • Shoot! Anywhere Online Community, and Remote Groups. Photographers worldwide are encouraged to register for the event and participate remotely either individually or as part of a regional group or association. Participants can create their own local events that include organized shoots in the day's five main image categories and where appropriate, expert instruction and parties. Several PhotoShelter partners have already started assembling online groups and remote events in key cities worldwide, including the Advertising Photographers of America (http://www.apanational.com), Slideluck Potshow (http://www.slideluckpotshow.com/), and Strobist (http://strobist.blogspot.com/). Partners Nikon, Adorama Camera and other leading industry brands will be on hand offering hands-on product demos and special discounts. The event will culminate with an evening party and a sampling of the five on-location photo shoots from earlier in the day.

The Day categories are encouraged to submit their work to the PhotoShelter Collection, PhotoShelter's stock photo marketplace, where images can be licensed as stock photography to top buyers. I'm so excited to see how the photographers across the world respond, and of course, how quickly I can access their new images."
"From professional shooters to casual shutterbugs, this is a great chance for photographers across the world to learn about the important role that quality stock photography plays in everyday life," said Edward Fasano, general manager for marketing, SLR System Products at Nikon, Inc. "By actively contributing as the exclusive camera manufacturer for Shoot! The Day, our aim is to educate the photographer, and provide them with the equipment and the knowledge that helps to unlock the creative potential that resides in all of us."

Corbis announced the grand opening of the new Museum of Art for the Arts (MofAA). The MofAA is a virtual museum fictitiously based in New York City that is dedicated to being the foremost art and image museum in the world..
Take a virtual tour www.mofaa.org
Through the leadership of its mostly imaginary Trustees and staff, the MofAA manifests its commitment to the arts by acquiring, preserving, and displaying collections of superior quality. The MofAA collections reflect past, current and future visual expression and transcend national and cultural boundaries. It’s also a great way to explore and have fun with the Corbis images that fill the museum.
The virtual three-story building perched high above Broadway in the Flatiron District of New York City houses the main collections and temporary exhibition galleries with 250 landmark works of art plus thousands of other images borrowed from Corbis’ world famous contemporary and historical collections. Much of the MofAA is also translated into English, French, German and Italian for visitors from around the world.
Each floor represents a different level of access for visitors. The first floor is general admission that is open to the public and features one exhibit. The second floor is open to members, or people who are registered with Corbis, and features additional exhibits and activities. The third floor, dedicated to benefactors, features additional exhibits and benefits for select clients.
Visitors to the MofAA enter into a multimedia experience with photography, paintings, audio tours and music, which is provided courtesy of Trackdown Music (www.trackdownmusic.com). There are also community features like blogs for exhibitions and a live newsfeed of the latest real and fanciful happenings in the art world such as recent art thievery and ‘suddenly’ discovered priceless works. New features and functionality will be added in the coming months to continue to enhance the experience and enable dialogue amongst visitors, including the ability for users to curate and share their own exhibitions.
“The MofAA is helping to create a greater sense of community amongst art enthusiasts who appreciate humanity’s enduring fascination with art and photography through the ages,” said Brooke Hendricks, the mythical President Emeritus of MofAA. “We invite everyone to wander through our galleries and engage in a series of open-ended arguments and counter-arguments that reflect the issues of our lives -- or just write funny comments about the pictures!”
Current exhibitions include “Tes One”, a contemporary artist blurring the lines between graffiti art and graphic design; “Music Legends”, featuring photographs of the some of world’s most famous artists; “Car Songs”, an ode to our love affair with cars; and “Music & Lyrics”, an inspiring mix of images that invite patrons to write their own title or lyrics.
The MofAA is the brainchild of FWIS, a New York City graphic design firm. Firm partners Ben Pieratt, Eric Jacobsen, and Christopher Papasadero built the MofAA to create a dialogue between the established and the avant-garde, the past and the present, in an environment that is responsive to the issues of contemporary culture, while being accessible to a public that ranges from the scholarly to the casually curious.
“Corbis’ collection is astoundingly deep and broad, and the images contained within it have profound impact on our culture – creative or otherwise,” said Christopher Papasadero, Creative Director, FWIS. “The MofAA highlights this imagery as a modern museum should - through well-curated exhibitions and public participation, on display."

Mary Evans Picture Library, have launched a new and improved website.
Completely rewritten on a new platform by Mary Evans IT Director, Mark Braund, the website is designed to make finding pictures on the site easier and quicker. The new search engine means more accurate search results; handling metadata in such a way that descriptive information does not compromise valid search results.
Take the tour! www.maryevans.com
"Having looked at the various website options commercially available, nothing quite gave us the flexibility we wanted, so we decided to produce the website ourselves. This enabled us to accommodate suggestions for improvements made by our clients" said Braund.
"We wanted to produce a website focused on simplicity and speed. As well as one-click downloads from thumbnails and preview images, Mark has also developed a powerful range of tools that allow more in depth searching for those who need it." said Managing Director, Paul Brown.
Visitors to the home page will see that the style of the website has also changed to become more information driven. New images and collections are given prominence with a section that allows site users to keep up to date with the increasingly diverse additions to the library's holdings. Another section devoted to image themes aims to inspire clients and agents with ideas for anniversaries, features or to give contemporary topics a historical twist.
The new "collections" section also showcases the many varied areas of history covered by Mary Evans. With images being drawn from a growing army of contributors, as well as the Mary Evans core collection, this has increased considerably over the last few months to include fine art, personalities, vintage posters, events of the 20th century and the world wars. And, with the web access to this incomparable collection more streamlined, efficient and user-friendly, Mary Evans can now truly be regarded as the one stop shop for history.

Photolibrary campaign from TBWA\TEQUILA\ Singapore goes from strength to strength.
The campaign of 3 print ads was launched in December 2007 to promote Photolibrary's royalty-free images, it ran across Asia, Australia and the US. To date the work has won awards at the following regional and international shows: The Spikes, One Show and Clio. The campaign has also made it into D&AD.
TBWA\TEQUILA\ Singapore has only had the regional Photolibrary account since late ‘07. But the work has already raised the client’s profile in the ad industry.
Photolibrary is a global stock image provider to the Advertising, Design and Publishing Community. The brief from the client was that they wanted their advertising to work harder for them.
The work soon got the ad industry talking. And since the target audience is advertising creatives themselves, another indication that the ads have struck the right chord is the awards that have recently been gathered.
This makes it the only campaign from Singapore to be recognized at all these competitions.
Glenn Parker, Chief Executive Officer of Photolibrary commented: “It’s fantastic that our work has been honoured this way. We know advertising juries aren’t easily impressed. We see this as the first of many marketing activities by TBWA\TEQUILA\ to promote our brand not just in Asia, but also globally”

Alamy, the stock photo site, is launching a new scheme offering customers the chance to buy images for limited uses for as little as 60p.
Aimed at new users like teachers or bloggers who do not normally buy pictures, the Limited Use scheme, due to go live imminently, is initially being trialled in the UK only. It will be launched worldwide in the near future.
Customers looking for photos for certain web uses such as blogs and social networking sites or for educational uses like classroom presentations can buy from Alamy for as little as 60p per picture.
So far around 3.5 million images – approximately a quarter of the 12 million pictures on the Alamy site – are available for Limited Use. The choice will increase as the Alamy’s ever growing collection continues to expand.
Contributors to Alamy have the option of making their images available for Limited Use as well as being sold conventionally, giving them the opportunity to earn additional income without cannibalising their existing sales.
Alamy CEO James West said: “This opens up our encyclopaedic collection to customers who can’t afford conventional licences. It also allows our contributors to compete in the low cost markets without undermining their existing revenue streams.”
The scheme differs from micro payment because it covers RF and RM images, the images are for sale at ‘normal’ prices elsewhere and the pricing may differ according to the project.

OnAsia has announced the release of an upgrade to its Windows-based Image Keyworder software.
The new version includes a customized ‘Alamy Mode’ for users submitting images to the UK-based photo agency Alamy.
“Throughout the development of Image Keyworder we have aimed to create a tool that is tailored closely to the needs of digital photographers faced with the challenge of indexing their images and submitting to online agencies,” said Yvan Cohen, Director at OnAsia.
The new functionality for Alamy contributors means that Image Keyworder is currently the only commercially available software that has been tailor designed to accommodate the specific annotation requirements of Alamy. The tool enables Alamy contributors to work on batches of images; speeding up the workflow for getting their images online.
“When Alamy announced that it was changing its metadata requirements a few months ago, we saw an opportunity to customize our Image Keyworder tool for a very specific group of users,” explained Mr Cohen. “Alamy was extremely supportive throughout this process and we now hope that their contributors will see the benefits of the customized functionality we are providing for them,” he added.
Image Keyworder comes bundled with a thesaurus comprising over 40,000 terms, including synonyms, alternate forms, spelling variations and singulars and plurals. The thesaurus is continually being enriched and updated.
“The thesaurus function means that with a single click you can add several relevant terms to an image. It’s much easier and faster than keywording manually,” explained Mr Cohen.
Having grown out of OnAsia’s experience as a professional keywording service, Image Keyworder also offers users a number of features aimed at combining comprehensive keywording with productivity. Groups of images can be processed in batches, templates can be created and saved for repeat image types and keywords can be selectively added and removed from sets of images.
