Corbis Launches Women In Sport Collection

Corbis announces the addition of new imagery from Jason Joyce featuring women in high concept futuristic sport settings.
The images have been retouched to give the photos a clean, vibrant and surreal look.

The imagery by photographer Jason Joyce is featured along with photography of iconic athletes, contemporary champions and action shots from a host of leading sporting events on Corbis’ sports microsite www.corbis.com/sports.

The new imagery from Joyce features women fencers, swimmers, archers, weight-lifters, soccer players and others in high concept futuristic settings.

The concept and storyboard for the shoot in London was conceived and managed by Corbis Art Director Martin Yates. Joyce designed the set-up and lighting for the shoot so the images would be suitable for the post-production team to manipulate. The retouching was handled at Corbis, and a 3-D designer created the backgrounds using state-of-the-art 3-D imaging software.

“Our creative research consistently finds that there is a lot of demand for imagery featuring women in sports, and this new collection celebrates female athletes in a way that is undoubtedly compelling and unique,” said Martin Yates, Art Director, Corbis. “The atmosphere for the shoot was inspired by science fiction movies like Aeon Flux and transports us to another time and place.”

Jason Joyce lives and works in London. He began his career as a fashion photographer before moving into celebrity portraiture. His work has been published in world-leading publications including Interview, Esquire, Harpers Bazaar and Q. Recently he has shot advertising campaigns for Mother and McCann Erickson advertising agencies in the UK.

"With the summer games in Beijing approaching, we wanted to create something fresh and different that appeals to creatives looking for an alternative vision,” said Joyce. “I’m really proud of this work and the way it breaks down preconceived notions of beauty and athletics.”

Fujifilm Student Awards - Winner

fujifilm.jpg

The winner of the 2008 Fujifilm Student Awards: David Wala from Newcastle College.

This year's Awards were run in conjunction with Penguin Books and the brief was to provide a cover for the re-issued version of Ralph Ellison's 1952 masterpiece, Invisible Man. David's winning image will now grace the cover when the book is released as part of Penguin's Modern Classics series. In addition to this amazing prize, David has been named as Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2008. He also collects £200 of Fujifilm Professional film, a library of 100 Penguin Classics titles and a copy of the book, 'Seven Hundred Penguins'.

David, a mature student, has just finished the first year of a two-year Foundation Degree in Commercial Photographic Practice. Before starting his degree David worked within the textile industry but has always had aspirations to become a full-time photographer.

David was presented with his award at the packed ceremony, held at Direct Lighting's base in London. He was understandably delighted: "If someone had told me when I started my course 12 months ago that one of my images would be on the cover of a Penguin book I simply wouldn't have believed them! I'm sure the kudos of winning such a respected award will help my career, I feel really honoured that my work has been recognised by Fujifilm and Penguin Books."

Fujifilm used the awards evening to announce the continuation of the tie-in with Penguin Books. The companies have selected 'Silent Spring' by Rachel Carson for next year's competition and students will be invited to submit images for the book's cover when the title is re-launched. The 2009 Fujifilm Student Awards will be launched in September.

The winning image, together with those of the Merit winners are available to view at www.fujifilmstudentawards.co.uk

ASPP Produce Best Practice Guidelines

The American Society of Picture Professionals has released guidelines entitled “ASPP’s Best Practices for Locating Copyright Owners of Photographic and Visual Art”.

The guide can be found at the ASPP website at: http://www.aspp.com/users/ASPPSite4390/ASPP_Best_Practises_v2_7-8-08.pdf

This guide is intended to be a “living document” and will be continually updated as new registries and technologies become available. This version 2.0 contains many useful links to organizations and other places where one can access information.

Executive Director, Cathy Sachs, expressed the following thoughts: “Especially in light of the Orphan Works pending legislation, it was our hope that these guidelines would be helpful in locating copyright holders, and that they might eventually aid in the construction of the defined "diligent search". This in turn, we hoped, would minimize the flood of "orphans" that might be created by inadequate search procedures. We feel that none of our members would benefit from that.”

Sarah Wakely

Sarah Wakely, Practical Motorhome’s deputy editor, recently won a prestigious award for the best caravanning article of 2007, while editor Robert Ganley ensured the Haymarket title swept the category by taking second place.

Wakely beat off strong competition for Best Article at the Caravan Club Media Awards 2007, including entrants from the Times newspaper and the Caravan Club’s own magazine.

Her feature ‘Fire and Ice’ detailed her epic trip in a Volkswagen camper van to Iceland last summer. She braved choppy seas to spend a week exploring lava fields, vast glaciers and... lobster parties.

The judging panel were impressed by how Wakely made her trip read “like an adventure to another world”.

Ganley said: “This is a brilliant result for Sarah. Practical Motorhome tries to capture the spirit of adventure and put it down on paper for our readers, and no one does this better than Sarah. It’s a great acknowledgement of her outstanding writing ability.”

Freelance journalist Doug King was named Best Journalist on the basis of three stories, including ‘Danger, gas leak’, published in Practical Motorhome.

Through the lens - Bangalore

19arts.jpg

The Frozen Memories-2008 exhibition, organised by The Photojournalist Association of Bangalore, draws on these lines. Works by 65 different photographers (who are active photojournalists) are on display at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.

The photographs show some rare moments in the social and political happenings around the world that are captured through the camera lens.

Imagining our daily newspapers without images is as hard as looking at a world without colours.

These images gain importance as they are momentary glimpses of events that evoke emotion in viewers. On display are shots from various parts of life, such as rare profiles of political leaders, sports players, social activities, riots, protests, celebrities and more. They present to us various languages of image-making that reflect humour, satire and patriotism.

Photographs like Abhayahasta capture the present chief minister giving promises to a women candidate of his party. Focus Point is an exhibit that captures a notorious moment from a cricket match, loaded with humour because of the angle from which it is captured. It features a few cheerleaders and a bunch of teenagers.

Helping Hand captures a rare glimpse of humanity where a snake is being fed water from a bottle. Naked Truth reveals the fact that child labour is still prevalent in the City — it shows a chain of little lads carrying construction material. Captain Raj features moments from the life of late actor Dr Rajkumar. He is surrounded by a swarm of fans who are in a joyous mood after seeing their hero return after a prolonged illness. Can We Stop His Tears is a series of images of Dr Rajkumar, who is spellbound and becomes emotional upon seeing the love showered on him by his fans.

The exhibition is really captivating as it has interesting images already published in various newspapers. The show gives us a chance to look back in time. The exhibition is on till July 19, 2008

NTI's China Photo Library

chinaonline.jpg

News Team International (NTI) now have a website hosting a live feed of images from the Chinese State Press Agency (Xinhua).
http://xinhua.newsteam.co.uk/cgi-bin/xinhua

NTI also became the sole UK partner to EPA (European Pressphoto Agency), and are responsible for resourcing all the UK images for their global picture service.

The Xinhua site is simple and straight forward to use, and will give registered users permission to order images through email, or download hi-res images directly. These permissions are negotiated directly with Milica Timotic on email: syndication@newsteam.co.uk.

Many of the images NTI provide to EPA will be included in EPA’s service to UK national newspapers. However, NTI also commissions it’s own photographers in all parts of the UK and Ireland and are now able to offer photography of news and feature events on a commission or speculative basis to all UK newspapers under the NTI banner. These will not be part of the EPA service to the UK. NTI has a particularly strong team of photographers available in the London area.
Some national desks have started to successfully use NTI’s extended service and we are happy we now have a solid foundation to extend this service to all national daily and Sunday clients.

NTI have an office in London, in Oxford Street, which they share with EPA.

This is headed up by Milica Timotic for NTI and Andy Rain for EPA. Phone number - 0207 495 3713 – email: londonpics@newsteam.co.uk . The London office is responsible for all work in London and south. Phones are manned 24 hours a day.

Alamy's 'Limited Use' Goes Worldwide

In response to feedback from its contributors, Alamy is considering some changes to it's Limited Use scheme, as it goes worldwide following a trial in the UK.
Alamy CEO James West said: “The concerns that have been raised are valid and we are working on ways of addressing them.”

Alamy is looking at the issue of file sizes after worries that the larger sizes could be used outside the terms of the scheme. It is also considering allowing contributors to opt in to the scheme using a pseudonym or on a per image basis so that only parts of their collection are available for Limited Use. At present, contributors have to allow their entire collection to be available if they opt in.

The Limited Use scheme, which was launched last month, is aimed at new users like teachers or bloggers who do not normally buy pictures. It offers images from 60p, $1 or €1, restricting sales to a narrowly defined set of usages such as educational use or personal blogs and social network sites.

Contributors to Alamy have the option of making their images available for Limited Use as well as being sold conventionally, giving them the opportunity to earn additional income without affecting their existing sales.

Red Cover Resolution

We and many others, have been with the company for a number of years and feel we can work together to get Red Cover back on-track and ensure they take their place as a major player in the ‘rights-managed’ picture library industry." Commented contributors Andrew Twort & Johnny Bouchier.

Press Release from Red Cover issued 14th July 2008:
Red Cover has been going through some difficult times recently, during a period of rapid growth and without the benefit of third party investments.

To this end a formal meeting was held with a representative group of contributors and creditors. At this meeting, administered by Fisher Partners, Chartered Accountants, a plan to take the company forward under the Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) was approved unanimously.

“We put forward a number of proposals and all were accepted,” comment two contributors, Andrew Twort & Johnny Bouchier. ‘We and many others, have been with the company for a number of years and feel we can work together to get Red Cover back on-track and ensure they take their place as a major player in the ‘rights-managed’ picture library industry."

“With the blessing of the contributors we plan to create a much more transparent business working closely with all of our writers and photographers and the existing internal team to build a better business for all“ said Mark Bezodis, Managing Director

The company now plans to work closely with the SAA (Stock Artists Alliance) and BAPLA (British Association of Picture Library and Agencies) to meet these new objectives.

Red Cover has always had fantastic imagery but now with the backing of so many key photographers and writers it really can look to the future.

PicScout And Splash Give Bloggers Latest Celeb Pics

PicScout has teamed up with Splash News to give bloggers access to up-to-the minute celebrity photos at Picapp.com.
PicScout, which developed and operates PicApp, and Splash News have come together to offer bloggers and other online publishers premium, licensed images to illustrate news and creative content on their sites, while at the same time, addressing content owners’ usage tracking and copyright concerns.

“Making Splash content available through PicApp will help thousands of bloggers upgrade their sites with quality photos and, in turn, expose our rich database of images to millions of people,” Gary Morgan, CEO, Splash News, said. “Splash teams with PicApp to reduce online piracy and to create a new media revenue stream to its contributors.”

Adding Splash content to PicApp’s broad image library brings PicApp closer to being the de facto “one-stop-shop” for the widest range of images for bloggers, in many popular categories, including sports, technology, fashion – and now, more than ever, entertainment.

“We’ve had quite a bit of feedback from our online publisher community that suggests that celebrity/entertainment images are difficult for them to attain, primarily due to the high licensing costs and the importance of the delivery timeliness,” Eyal Gura, CEO, PicScout, said. “Working with Splash gives online publishers easy access to Hollywood celebrities – photos that they couldn’t afford before.”

PicApp also offers an image RSS feeder that allows bloggers to pre-set the images they are interested in and get alerts through the RSS tool when new images matching their criteria are uploaded to PicApp.

PicApp is currently in beta. Other news and photo agencies licensing images to PicApp include, among others, Getty Images, Corbis and Image Source. Once at www.picapp.com, bloggers can select from the wide range of images and use them for free adjacent to a news post or editorial content on their sites. When the image is streamed from the PicApp servers, it comes with a non-intrusive ad that provides a monetization tool on the content owner’s behalf.

Mail Online - On Target

Net gains for Mail Online reports Martin Bream of Currybet.net on Pressgazette.co.uk

dailymail.png

(UK) With the latest ABCe figures, Mail Online has stormed into first place as the most popular UK newspaper site. Editorial director Martin Clarke ascribes this to investment in content, but the site’s redesign has also obviously gone down well.

.....The new homepage is more visual than the previous design, with a large space “above the fold” devoted to the day in pictures. Clarke cites investment in news and sport as key to Mail Online’s future, but I suspect that a lot of the increased usage of the site is down to the Mail’s eye-grabbing TV and showbiz coverage................

Anita Ekberg attacks the press
In stockings, angry faced Swedish film star, Anita Ekberg, threatens photographers with a bow and arrows in the grounds of her Roman villa in the early hours of the morning.

The trouble started when Miss Ekberg left a Rome nightclub and ran into a squad of roving paparazzi who followed her to her villa where they invaded the grounds. Anita entered the house and returned armed with bow and arrows and shooting with deadly accuracy smashed a flash gun and then another shot destroyed a camera. She then drove one of the blunt edged arrows into a photographer’s shoulder and grabbed a cameraman by the hair and attempted to knee him. The photographers finally fled in disorder. At noon the following day the maid had three words for photographers, 'She’s still asleep.'

And the price?
As I ranted earlier, I have always wanted to keep the cost of my prints low and this is exactly what I have done. Award winning photography from a fiver? Framed prints £60? Stunning canvas prints for under £200? I have waited a long time to say this but...

County Durham Photo Archive Online

cast0084_tcm4-17450.jpg
An Outing - Castle Eden - Date: 1920

Snapshots of life through the ages in County Durham are revealed in a new online archive.
From mining disasters to Royal visits and carnival capers – it has all been captured on camera in East Durham over the decades.

And now people around the world are being offered the chance to take a trip down memory lane, thanks to an Internet project.

People Past and Present, an archive of 3,000 photos, has just been added to the District of Easington Council's website.
Every village and town in East Durham is covered by the new catalogue, with the pictures dating from the 1880s to the 1970s.
And, with a host of subjects included – from street scenes to social gatherings – there is something for everyone on the site.

Colin Robson, arts officer for the council, said: "People Past and Present is an amazing piece of the district's heritage.
"By uploading the images on to the authority's site, more people can now access these wonderful photos of bygone years."
The online archive allows people to search the site by area, but plans are in the pipeline to extend the project over time.
"The second phase, which should be complete by the end of the summer, will allow subject and date searches too," said Colin.
"We will also be adding any information that comes in from viewers, to update the captions which accompany the pictures."

The picture archive was originally the brainchild of artist Stuart Brisley, regarded as the "Godfather of British performance art."
When appointed as town artist for Peterlee back in 1976, he was drawn to the idea of developing a catalogue of living memories.

"Rather than producing his own artwork, he considered it more relevant to create a collective interest in art," said Colin.
"Peterlee was still only a new town at the time, having been built in the 1940s and 50s, and he wanted to address this issue.
"His aim was to show that the history and heritage of Peterlee was rooted in the villages around it – hence a picture archive."

Brisley launched his ambitious project, called History Within Living Memory, in early 1976. It proved an immediate success.
For the next two years, six volunteers worked under the direction of John "Pop" Porter, collecting pictures and tape recordings for the "artwork".

"Local people were invited to bring along their photos, to provide a statement of life from World War One," said Colin.
"These were then rephotographed and mounted, to become part of the archive and have not really been seen in public since."

The decision to disband Peterlee Development Corporation in 1978 brought an end to Brisley's three-pronged project.

"Pop Porter and his team finished their work under the auspices of the new Easington District Council, creating the present archive," said Colin.
"But the second and third parts, which involved the publication of a history of the corporation and provided a forum for local people, were never completed."

Stored at the council offices ever since, the archive boasts thousands of rare photographs, slides and recordings.

"It includes scenes featuring the humble origins of the district, from agriculture to the creation of the coal industry," said Colin.
"But it also includes pictures of the people who gave the villages their own unique character, as well as family and street scenes."

Eventually, the council hopes to include soundbite clips of the archive's interviews too, as they have just been digitalised.

But, for the moment, they are concentrating on revamping the search engine, to allow easier access to the thousands of photos.

"The recordings include 40 or 50 tapes about incidents like colliery
disasters, as well as tales of day to day life," said Colin.
"These interviews have been pretty much inaccessible since the 1970s, so I'm sure they'd be of great interest to many people."

Framing a Century: Master Photographers, 1840-1940

framing_century_big.jpg

Master Photographers' Work of 1840-1940 Highlighted from Rich Holdings of the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

Exhibition Dates: June 3 – September 1, 2008
Exhibition Location: Galleries for Drawings, Prints and Photographs, and The Howard Gilman Gallery, second floor

Framing a Century: Master Photographers, 1840-1940 tells the story of photography's first 100 years through the work of 13 key figures who helped shape the aesthetic and expressive course of the medium: Gustave Le Gray, Roger Fenton, Carleton Watkins, William Henry Fox Talbot, Julia Margaret Cameron, Nadar, Edouard Baldus, Charles Marville, Eugène Atget, Walker Evans, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Brassaï. Opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on June 3, 2008, the exhibition will present 10 to 12 iconic works by each of these influential artists, to convey a broad sense of their contributions to photography. Many of the works displayed in Framing a Century are drawn from the acclaimed Gilman Paper Company Collection, which was acquired by the Museum in 2005.
"The exhibition highlights the way in which the recently acquired Gilman Collection meshes perfectly with the Museum's existing collection to create deep, rich holdings of work by many of the most important masters of the first century of photography," noted Malcolm Daniel, Curator in Charge of the Department of Photographs. "There are, of course, many other individual masterpieces in the collection by a host of photographers, but this exhibition allows us to sense the full achievement of some of the medium's greatest artists."
Framing a Century begins with beautifully preserved works by three photographers of architecture and landscape: the Englishman Roger Fenton (1819–1869), the preeminent British photographer of the 1850s; Carleton Watkins (1829–1916), the consummate photographer of the American West during the 1860s and 1870s, famed for his early views of Yosemite; and the Frenchman Gustave Le Gray (1820–1884), who is now represented in the Met's collection by more than 40 photographs spanning his entire career, from his early views of Fontainebleau Forest and medieval architecture to his famed seascapes of the mid-1850s and his final pictures, made in Egypt.
The next section includes rare photographs by the inventor of paper photography, William Henry Fox Talbot (1800–1877), whose work in the Metropolitan ranges from some of the first photographs ever made, predating the announcement of photography, through iconic images that were included in Talbot's groundbreaking photographically illustrated book The Pencil of Nature, to examples of the photogravure process that consumed the latter part of his life.
Also in the second room of the exhibition are works by two masters of portraiture, Nadar(Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, 1820–1910) in France and Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879) in England. Nadar, whose keen observation of physiognomy and personality was honed as a caricaturist, was at his best when photographing his literary, artistic, and left-wing political friends, including the writer Alexandre Dumas, the critic Théophile Gautier, and the famous mime Charles Deburau. The subjects of Cameron's works in the exhibition include her friends—the eminent scientist Sir John Herschel and poet laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson—as well as family members, neighbors, and staff pressed into service as models in Cameron's biblical and literary tableaux.
The history, landscape, and streets of Paris and the French countryside are explored in works on view by: Edouard Baldus (1813–1889), whose images include historic monuments, the natural landscape, and the achievements of modern engineers; Charles Marville (1816–1879), best known for photographs commissioned by Napoleon III's master urban planner, Baron Hausmann, recording the transformation of Paris from a city of narrow streets and medieval buildings to one with grand boulevards and impressive public works that still define the French capital; and Eugène Atget (1857–1927), an artist who spent three decades documenting the look and feel of Paris and the surrounding region, working within a 19th-century tradition, nonetheless celebrated by the Surrealists.
The exhibition concludes with the work of four artists who were significant in transforming photography into a modern visual language. The exhibition's photographs by Man Ray (1890–1976), for example, will capture the broad creative scope of his work in the 1920s and 1930s, including portraits of fellow artists Marcel Duchamp and Jean Cocteau; documentation of his own ephemeral sculptures; and photographs that reveal his dynamic experimentation with the plasticity of the medium through solarization, photograms, negative prints, and film. Also included is work by pioneering and influential photojournalist Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004); Brassaï (1899–1984), the chronicler of Paris by night; and Walker Evans (1903–1975), best known for his Depression-era photographs in the American South.

Getty Images Announces Sale Completion

homeHeader.jpg

SEATTLE, July 02, 2008 - Getty Images, Inc. (NYSE:GYI) today announced the completion of its acquisition by an affiliate of the private equity firm Hellman & Friedman. Getty Images announced on February 25, 2008 a definitive agreement to be acquired by an affiliate of Hellman & Friedman in a transaction valued at approximately $2.4 billion.

“We are pleased to have completed this transaction so efficiently and to have rewarded our shareholders with a significant premium in a challenging stock market,” said Jonathan Klein, Chief Executive Officer of Getty Images. “Continued strong shareholder support is one of the factors that allowed us to become the leader in all categories of the visual content industry. As we enter the next phase of our history, we look forward to our partnership with Hellman & Friedman.”

“The founders, management team and dedicated employees of Getty Images have created a market leader that is well-positioned for future growth and innovation,” said Andy Ballard, Managing Director of Hellman & Friedman. “Getty Images fits well within our investment profile given its leading market position, strong cash flows and talented base of employees. We are excited about working with the entire Getty Images team to focus on long-term growth potential, product pipeline and innovation in both consumer and business to business offerings.”

Under the terms of the merger agreement, which was adopted by Getty Images’ stockholders at a special meeting held on June 20, 2008, Getty Images stockholders are entitled to receive $34.00 in cash, without interest and less any applicable withholding taxes, for each share of common stock they owned immediately prior to the effective time of the merger. Getty Images common stock will cease trading on the New York Stock Exchange at the close of market today and will be delisted from the New York Stock Exchange.

Stockholders of record will receive a letter of transmittal and instructions on how to surrender their shares of Getty Images common stock in exchange for the merger consideration. Stockholders of record should wait to receive the letter of transmittal before surrendering their shares.

In addition, Getty Images announced that it had entered into a supplemental indenture to the indenture governing its 0.5% Convertible Subordinated Debentures, Series B due 2023 (the “Debentures”), as required by the indenture. This supplemental indenture provides that, subject to the terms of the indenture, the Debentures will be convertible into $556.65 per $1,000 principal amount of Debentures, representing the amount of cash consideration to be received in the merger by a holder of common stock holding, immediately prior to the effective time of the merger, a number of shares of common stock equal to the conversion rate immediately prior to the merger. The Debentures are convertible until 35 business days after the merger and at other times as may be provided in the indenture.

The merger will constitute a “Fundamental Change” under the indenture. Holders of the Debentures (which have not been converted) will have the right after the merger to require Getty Images to purchase their Debentures on the 35th business day after the merger for a purchase price equal to the principal amount of such Debentures plus any accrued and unpaid interest to but not including the purchase date. Getty Images will provide further details to the holders of the Debentures regarding this right.

'Photo Illustration' Discussed At Black Star

Most photojournalists are not fans of the "photo illustration" -- the only category of newsroom artwork that permits substantial photo manipulation.
Many see it as an option of last resort. But does it have to be this way? Or, at a time when photojournalists are increasingly under fire for manipulating images with Photoshop, should the profession actually embrace the photo illustration as a means of deterring deception?

Black Star Rising contributors debated this issue in a pair of recent posts.

Longtime Black Star photographer Michael Coyne recommended an increased acceptance of the photo illustration, saying:

"I think that images used in publications, especially news media outlets, should have some sort of symbol, sign or comment notifying the viewer that the images have been manipulated if that is the case. Once we are open and honest about which images are manipulated, and the term ’photo illustration’ is common practice, then there will be less incentive for the photojournalist to be deceptive"

Other contributors strongly disagreed. Said photography instructor David Weintraub:

"Photo illustration, along with other terms, is meaningless, in my opinion -- because the reading/viewing public doesn’t have a clue what it means. It’s a shorthand way of saying, ’This photo is a lie, but we want you to believe it, so we put a disclaimer, usually in tiny type, to make ourselves feel ethical.’ Hooey"

Added freelance photojournalist Mike Fox:

"I think that the term ’photo illustration’ would act as an excuse for photojournalists to manipulate more ... I really don’t think that words will deter photographers from going astray"

But Coyne countered that today’s "fundamentalist" restrictions on manipulation of images in journalism are unfairly limiting photographers.

"We have always been able to alter images; it has been happening since photography was invented. It is only since the advent of Photoshop that we have had this fundamentalist attitude about changing photographs" Coyne said.

"As long as the photographer reveals that they have adjusted or altered the image and calls it ’photo illustration,’ then I have no problem with the picture. Let us accept and embrace the term ... and acknowledge that there are certain circumstances where it has, does and will always happen. It may be that the photographer feels that this is necessary to show the viewers the totality of a situation"

Developing Image Keyworder

OnAsia has announced the release of a new upgrade to its Windows-based Image Keyworder software, allowing users to participate in its development.
The new version includes a ‘suggest’ function which means that users can proactively propose terms for inclusion in the program’s comprehensive controlled vocabulary.

The new version is currently available at www.imagekeyworder.com and as a free upgrade for existing users,

The new functionality is designed to enhance the depth and breadth of Image Keyworder’s controlled vocabulary, which comes bundled with the software and is one of its most valuable features. Image Keyworder’s controlled vocabulary is already over 40,000 terms strong, including synonyms, alternate forms, spelling variations and singulars and plurals.

“We are aware that one of Image Keyworder’s greatest strengths is its controlled vocabulary,” said Yvan Cohen, a Director at OnAsia, the company which developed the software.

“We have a team of people who are working to expand and enrich the thesaurus, but users occasionally still find a gap in our coverage especially if the terms they wish to add are specialised. With our new ‘suggest’ function they can send their suggestions directly to our team for review,” he added.

Accessible as a button on the toolbar at the top of Image Keyworder’s workscreen, users can add lists of terms that they would like to suggest for inclusion in the controlled vocabulary accompanied by notes as to their meaning and relevance. They are also able to see if the term has been accepted or declined and any relevant comments from Image Keyworder’s in-house team.
