Jerry Tavin ASPP 2008 Picture Professional Of The Year

aspp.gif
The American Society of Picture Professionals (ASPP) has named Jerry Tavin as its 2008 Picture Professional of the Year.

He is known for his devotion to maintaining the highest standards in the business of stock photography and never compromising on quality and ethics. ASPP Board member, Michael Masterson, reflects the opinion of many colleagues by saying: "In my own experience, Jerry has been a steady friend, ally and mentor, always supportive, caring, enthusiastic and incredibly knowledgeable. There is no one in our industry that is more deserving of this honor."

Jerry follows in the footsteps of previous award winners: Jane Kinne, Larry Levin, Anita Duncan, Niki Barrie, and Nancy Wolff, who all fulfilled the following criteria: being a current ASPP member who has demonstrated one or more of the following qualities --- significant contributions to photography, a single outstanding achievement and long-time service to the association or its members. Executive Director, Cathy Sachs, says "If anyone has demonstrated long-time service to our industry it is Jerry. He has touched so many lives and is universally beloved by his colleagues, friends and students whom he has mentored".

Jerry Tavin has had a long, illustrious career in the photography, travel, music and recruiting industries. He was trained as an attorney, and then founded a successful chain of travel agencies. He later moved to Germany and became a music manager for one of the top jazz singers there. After marrying Janou Pakter, Jerry helped launch her successful global executive search firm 24 years ago.

In 1994 Jerry and Janou created nonstock, a high-end worldwide photography collection that offered an alternative to other more traditional stock agencies. Nonstock represented some 500 advertising, fashion and fine art photographers who contributed more than 40,000 images. The agency was highly respected for its unique, cutting edge and compelling imagery. In addition to establishing worldwide distribution for the nonstock brand, Jerry also represented many other collections for U.S. distribution.

After selling nonstock to PictureArts in 2004, Jerry could have chosen to retire. Instead he continued to work in the photo industry, managing a collection of vintage imagery and then partnering in 2007 with the French agency PhotoAlto to start a new rights-managed online collection called IC Worldwide, an "oasis for distinguished photographers, which reflects his leadership and vision.

Jerry's enthusiasm for photography and his entrepreneurial spirit are unmatched in this industry. He has always been an advocate not just for photography, but for the photographers themselves. He is known for his devotion to maintaining the highest standards in the business of stock photography and never compromising on quality and ethics. In addition says long-time admirer, Beate Chelette, He is genuinely interested in the well-being of those around him and especially his staff and colleagues. He is always willing to share his business expertise and experience openly and lend a helping hand.

A really good guy, wise, funny, gregarious, musically talented soul are some of the tributes being paid to Jerry.

Nikon And HP Develop High-Res Digital Image Repro System

Working together since 2005, the result of this Nikon and Hewlett-Packard collaboration is a new high-resolution digital imaging system for reproducing fine art.

From the press release:

The digital fine art (DFA) market, the field concerned with the capture, preservation and digital reproduction of artwork, has expanded incredibly in recent years with the steady increase in digital image resolution. However, the faithful digitization and printing of artwork demands a clear knowledge of the entire workflow, from capture to image processing and final printing, as well as the necessary technologies.

Nikon and HP are proud to introduce their new system, which offers a total capture-to-print solution. This system optimizes and improves the digital fine art workflow by reducing total production time from hours to minutes. The system is comprised of the Nikon D3 digital-SLR camera for capture, a special edition of ErgoSoft's StudioPrint photo RIP software for image processing, and HP's Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer for printing. This system enables faithful reproduction of originals with optimization of a variety of aspects, including those of the camera and lens used for capture, lighting conditions, white balance, and the paper used for printing. Moreover, this system offers the added benefits of minimal initial cost as purchase of a large-format digital camera is not a requirement, as well as significant improvements in workflow and efficiency.

The result of collaboration between Nikon and HP is a single capture-to-print system that maximizes the capabilities of devices and software for digital reproduction with an unprecedented fidelity to the original and superior workflow and efficiency.

Photokina: Metadata Working Group

MTD.gif

At Photokina this week Adobe, Apple, Canon, Microsoft, Nokia and Sony announced their commitment to solve the interoperability issues between platforms, by tackling metadata and forming the Metadata Working Group.

This group came together in 2007 and has since been dedicated to solving key interoperability issues around organizing and searching for digital photos. The Metadata Working Group also introduced its first specification, which provides guidelines designed to increase interoperability and preservation of metadata in digital photographs. For more information on the Metadata Working Group and to read the press release, please visit the group’s website at:
http://metadataworkinggroup.com – or read on for the full text of the release.......

For Release Sept. 24, 2008
Metadata Working Group Introduces First Specification for Interoperability and Preservation of Metadata in Digital Photography
Adobe, Apple, Canon, Microsoft, Nokia and Sony form Metadata Working Group.

COLOGNE, Germany — Sept. 24, 2008 - At Photokina 2008, industry-leading companies announced the Metadata Working Group, an organization formed in 2007 dedicated to solving key interoperability issues that make finding, organizing and searching for digital photos a challenge. Today, the Metadata Working Group has also introduced its first specification, which provides guidelines designed to increase interoperability and preservation of metadata in digital photographs.

“Lack of metadata interoperability has led to significant frustration for both consumer and pro photographers, and our companies have spent considerable resources trying to deal with the problem,” said Josh Weisberg, chairman and founder of the Metadata Working Group and director of Microsoft’s Rich Media Group. “Getting these industry leaders together to rally around metadata interoperability is a real turning point, one that we believe will result in technology that’s easier for photographers to use. We’ve been working very hard to produce guidelines that are compatible across all applications, devices and services and that provide best practices for how, when and where metadata should be changed in popular file formats.”

Metadata, sometimes referred to as “data about data,” is important to digital photography because it allows photographers to tag their digital photos with information such as where and when they were taken. For both professional photographers and consumers, this enables basic activities such as being able to find and share photos. Although the digital photography industry has several metadata standards, these existing standards often overlap in purpose and lack interoperability guidance. The result is that many interoperability scenarios between devices, applications and services are not possible because no clearly defined rules and standards exist to ensure consistent use. The Metadata Working Group’s initial guidelines target still photo metadata, with a focus on common consumer uses. The guidelines also identify overlapping content between existing standards and schemas.

“We’ve chosen to address the most common issues photographers face as we feel this will make the biggest impact for the average photographer,” Weisberg said. “Down the road, we will expand our work to include other metadata issues relevant to photographers.”

About Metadata Working Group
Based on a 2006 proposal by Microsoft, the Metadata Working Group (MWG) organization was created in 2007 by five founding members: Adobe Systems, Inc., Apple Inc., Canon Inc., Microsoft and Nokia. Sony Corp. joined the organization as a board member in 2008. The group is dedicated to the preservation and seamless interoperability of digital media metadata and to interoperability and availability to all applications, devices and services. For more information, please visit the Metadata Working Group Web site at http://metadataworkinggroup.com .

Alamy To Open US Office

Alamy, the world’s largest online stock photo library, has today announced plans to expand by opening a sales office in the US.
The UK-based company is aiming to grow its US business, particularly in the high value markets, by 30 to 40 per cent a year by establishing a local presence. The move, due to take place early in 2009, is a departure from Alamy’s UK-based sales model and will mean a change to its current commission structure.

To fund the extra costs of operating in the US, the company is planning to increase its commission fee by five per cent. Distributor sales commission will also go up by five per cent. The increases will apply once the US sales team has been recruited.

However, Alamy will be discontinuing some of the charges that contributors pay such as bank transfer and cheque fees and the one per cent foreign exchange fee on accounts not paid in dollars.

Alamy CEO James West explained: “We feel there are great opportunities to increase our business in the US and make more money for our contributors by setting up an office there.

“We cannot sustain such an expansion through our current commission structure but believe that whatever our contributors may lose in commission revenue will be more than made up for through a substantial increase in sales.”

The company is forecasting an increase in gross contributor payments over a three year period of between £1 million and £3.5 million.

“Around 80 per cent of our revenue comes from high value, high volume large accounts but we are under-exposed in this market in the US,” said West. “From talking to our US customers, it became clear that we need to establish a US presence.”

West is planning to move to America with his family for six months next year to oversee operations and learn more about the market. Recruiting is taking place now for sales staff for the office.

Kursiv Release New Keywording Software

kim_boxlogo_200px.png

Keywording is time consuming and expensive.
With "KIM Keywording" swiss photoagency Kursiv launches a new software for faster keywording of images with a variety of unique features. The product offers a structured approach to the keywording of large amounts of images and supports up to 10 languages.

Read on for a special introductory offer from KIM Keywording available to PhotoArchiveNews.com readers........

As an introductory offer, KIM Keywording can be purchased with 20% rebate 'till the end of september 2008. This applies to any license type. To profit from this special offer, purchase online at www.kursiv.com and enter the following code in your shopping basket: PHOTOARCHIVENEWS.

Images without keywords cannot be found in the internet – and thus will not be sold. Good keywording is essential for photoagencies and photographers, and becomes even more important with the ever increasing number of images available on searchengines worldwide.

What is considered a "good" keywording is dependent on your own requirements and those of your distribution partners. Not all searchengines in the web are the same. KIM Keywording allows you to keyword once, and create a variable output according to your needs.

KIM Keywording realizes this by applying a "contextual keywording". A context is more important as the keywords themselves. A context means a keyword in a unique setting. Whenever a new keyword is added to the keyword database, it gets the unique context from its unique position within the keyword hierarchy.

The keyword "Switzerland", for example, is linked to a larger context of "geography – Europe – Western Europe – Switzerland" and the word "snowing" comes from the larger context "nature – phenomena – weather – snow – snow flake – snowing". Every single context also has fields for plurals and synonyms, and all this for up to 10 languages.
Once an image has been keyworded with KIM Keywording, the software "knows" what contexts were applied to that image. This allows for adjustments to the keyword catalog, like deactivating plurals, or expanding synonyms and the like. Pushing a button will then update all keywords of all images.

KIM Keywording supports up to 10, also non-latin languages. As many agencies send out their images to different service partners for the keywording of several languages, no such extra hasle is required when using KIM Keywording. New languages can be added to the keyword database in which every unique context allows for unique and precise translations. Once the new language is added to the keyword database, the additional language can be applied to all already keyworded images with a simple mouseclick. As all images have been keyworded with unique contexts, the result is an extremely fast and reliable workflow with correct translations.

KIM Keywording reads and writes IPTC Core fields from TIFF- and JPEG files. Export of metadata is possible for many formats, including CSV, Excel, XML, etc. KIM Keywording is a cross platform software for Mac and Windows and can now be purchased in a version for 1 or 10 languages.

Further informations, screencasts as well as a test version can be found here:

Dennis Publishing Expands Into India

dennis_363_25.jpg

Dennis Publishing announced a joint venture with Media Transasia to launch Dennis Media Transasia India Ltd.
The venture will be privately owned and based in New Delhi. The move into India will tap into the fast-maturing media market of 1.1 billion consumers.

Dennis Media Transasia India Ltd will begin by adding music magazine Blender to the joint venture. The magazine has already made a flying start in India and continues to attract readers and advertisers alike with its cutting edge design and sharp editorial. Additional magazine launches are planned for the next six months, but there are also several digital only brands in the mix. The growth of digital advertising revenue in India - planned to almost double to 7,500 million rupees in the next two years - also underpins the venture. The combination of Dennis Publishing's expertise in this field - almost 40% of UK ad revenue is digital - and Media Transasia India's business breadth and extensive network throughout India, will create a dynamic culture and company.

Dennis Publishing will ally its men's sector expertise (Maxim, Men's Fitness, evo, Monkey) to the local knowledge and capabilities of Media Transasia, to continue to develop brands like Blender and introduce key international licenses in this sector. The long-term aim is for Dennis Media Transasia India Ltd to become the largest men's publisher in India.

James Tye, CEO of Dennis Publishing, comments: "India is the most dynamic media market in the world and is an obvious choice for our global and digital expansion. I am also delighted with our choice of partner - we are both privately owned companies and we share the same philosophy of serving our customers with innovative and outstanding editorial, in print, online and on mobile. The rapid international expansion of Dennis Publishing means we now have a strong presence in four of the world's top 10 economies - the UK, USA, Australia and now India, with more to follow."

Media Transasia is one of South East Asia's most progressive publishers. Founded in 1977 the company has grown to encompass 3 countries, publishing 25 magazines and employing 400 people. With offices in the five key metropolitan cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata) the company was ideally placed to capitalise on the emerging and media hungry, urban 'middle classes.' Media Transasia India has doubled in size over the past 4 years.

In 2005 Media Transasia launched Maxim, the world's best selling men's lifestyle magazine, under a license agreement with Dennis Publishing. Maxim quickly established itself as the bench mark for international magazines looking to launch in India, selling three times more copies than the market leading men's magazine.

The Week Arrives In Australia

dennis_360_25.jpg

Dennis Publishing will launch its successful current affairs and commentary digest The Week in Australia.
The first issue will be on sale nationwide on October 31st.

"The Week has been a huge success, having secured a record 20 consecutive circulation increases in the United Kingdom," says Kerin O'Connor, Managing Director of the UK edition and Dennis Publishing Executive Director. "It's the most subscribed magazine in Britain of any kind. Meanwhile, it has reached a circulation of over half a million in the USA in just 6 years - growing 165% from its base circulation, a far better performance than any other news or current affairs title.

"The Week is now a global brand and has the potential to achieve similar success in the Australian market," adds O'Connor. "The magazine is based on a unique formula, distilling the best Australian and international news, opinion and ideas into just 35 pages. The same ingredients for success that we found in the UK and USA are present in Australia: a vibrant media, an appetite for news, and an intelligent, well educated population,"

The Week is the ideal companion to today's busy lifestyles. The mainstream Australian media produce around 10 million words every week. It's impossible for even the most diligent news junkie to keep up. The Week offers a succinct summary of all you need to know about everything that matters.

The bedrock of the magazine is its stylish summaries of the best opinion and commentary on national affairs and business. But it also covers the lighter side - sport, food, travel, health, gossip, property and the arts.

"The Week's success has been built on the quality of its writing and an ability to present a clear, unbiased editorial tone through the careful selection of stories and sources," states O'Connor. "I'm delighted that we were able to recruit David Salter as Editor-in-Chief, and Hall Greenland as Editor. Together they have more than 75 years of media experience in Australia and overseas. They make a great team."

Editor-in-Chief David Salter offers a sharp summary of The Week's editorial approach: "It's fair, fast and funny. The magic of The Week is its unique and innovative blend of paraphrase and quotation," he adds. "The key ingredients are intelligent selection, stylish precis - and wit.

"But we're not a conventional news magazine. It's not about us. We take no positions and parade no opinions of our own - only the best of the other media."

Felix Dennis, chairman and owner of Dennis Publishing, is confident that The Week can continue its growth as a global brand in a new market.

"The Week is perhaps the best-read magazine on the planet," he says. "Readers adore it, become addicted to it and proselytize about it to their friends. Its unique blend of information, opinion and entertainment has driven its extraordinary growth in the UK and the USA and I have no doubt that our Australian edition will work the same magic."

DRR Responds to PhotoShelter Collection Closing

'Today we learn that PhotoShelter is exiting the stock licensing business. Citing their slow growth and an inability to efficiently service photo buyers, and further handicapped by the limitations of a business model that depended far too much on largely part-time photographers to satisfy the requirements of full-time professionals these challenges have proven the undoing of PhotoShelter’s hopes to be a market leader in the stock licensing business.'

Exhibition: Tokyo Stories

tokyo.png

TOKYO STORIES
An exhibition of photographs by Hiroshi Hamaya, Tadahiko Hayashi and Shigeichi Nagano.
8–15 November 2008, Artcurial, 7 rond-point des Champs-Élysées, 75008 Paris

As part of Paris Photo 2008’s focus on Japan, Studio Equis presents, with the support of Epson, an exceptional exhibition Tokyo Stories, at Artcurial from 8–15 November 2008. With close to 100 rare prints, many of which have previously never been seen outside of Japan, Tokyo Stories reveals the multiple faces of Tokyo from the 1930s until the present day through the works of three of Japan’s leading photographers: Hiroshi Hamaya, Tadahiko Hayashi and Shigeichi Nagano.

As a native of Tokyo, the city naturally became Hamaya’s first photographic subject. His images taken in the 1930s reveal a mysterious and exotic city, light years away from the megalopolis we know today. Hayashi captured the physical devastation of Tokyo in the aftermath of the Pacific War and the determination of its inhabitants to build a better future amidst the rubble. Nagano’s photographs of the city over the last 50 years bear witness to the radical changes the city underwent during its modernisation whilst still holding onto its traditional past.

Tokyo is a city of contrasts, a kaleidoscope of images, where the futuristic present thrives alongside the traditional past. This exhibition presents these multiple faces of Tokyo: student protests, political intrigues, the birth of ‘salarymen’ and their endless workdays, geishas, prostitutes, street orphans, writers, artists, designers and fashionistas, ... all of these characters collide to create this city of layers and contrasts.

Millennium Images Shoot 'Hadron Collider' at CERN

Enrico1.jpg
The Large Hadron Collider by Enrico Sacchetti:From Millennium Images

Today sees the start-up of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva, Switzerland. The LHC will be the world's most powerful particle accelerator, and cost in excess of $6 billion. Today, for the first time, the LHC will send a proton beam around its 16.57-mile-long tunnel.

From the Press Release:

Experiments at the LHC will open new vistas on the deepest secrets of the universe, from new forces of nature to new dimensions of space. These experiments may help scientists unravel some of particle physics biggest mysteries such as the origin of mass and the identification of dark matter and possibly identify the Higgs boson particle, what is commonly known as the "God" particle. Scientists hypothesize that the Higgs boson is what causes mass to exist. Text by Enrico Sacchetti.

You can see a portfolio of Enrico Sacchetti's project at http://www.milim.com/new-work.php

Most of the activities at CERN are currently directed towards building a new collider, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the experiments for it. The LHC represents a large-scale, worldwide scientific cooperation project. The LHC tunnel is located 100 meters underground, in the region between the Geneva airport and the nearby Jura mountains. It uses the 27 km circumference circular tunnel previously occupied by LEP which was closed down in November 2000. CERN's existing PS/SPS accelerator complexes will be used to pre-accelerate protons which will then be injected into the LHC.

Six experiments (CMS, ATLAS, LHCb, TOTEM, LHC-forward and ALICE) are currently being built, and will be running on the collider; each of them will study particle collisions under a different point of view, and with different technologies. Construction for these experiments required an extraordinary engineering effort. Just as an example, to lower the pieces for the CMS experiment into the underground cavern which will host it, a special crane will have to be rented from Belgium, which will be able to lift the almost 2000 tons for each piece. The first of the approximately 5,000 magnets necessary for construction was lowered down a special shaft at 13:00 GMT on 7 March 2005. This accelerator will generate vast quantities of computer data, which CERN will stream to laboratories around the world for distributed processing (making use of a specialized GRID infrastructure, the LHC Computing Grid). In April 2005, a trial successfully streamed 600 MB per second to seven different sites across the world. If all the data generated by the LHC is to be analysed, then scientists must achieve 1,800 MB per second before 2008.

As of August 2008 the majority of the LHC ring is now cooled to the 1.9 K (-271.25 °C) operating temperature. The initial particle beams are due for injection in August 2008, the first attempt to circulate a beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for September 10, 2008, and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on October 21, 2008.

Haymarket Consider 'Eve' Closure

Eve_logo_3.gif

UK: Haymarket Media Group has entered into a consultation period with staff of women’s magazine Eve and some of its associated brand activities about the title’s potential closure.

Kevin Costello, Haymarket Consumer Media managing director, said: “The Eve team has worked tirelessly since we acquired the title over three years ago to create a brand that embodies the Haymarket values of quality and expertise. Despite these valiant efforts, Eve is making an unsustainable level of loss that is exacerbated by the recent ABC decline, the continuing strength of its key competitors and uncertain conditions within the UK economy generally.

“It is with great regret that we have had to consider closing the title. They are an extremely talented group of individuals and it’s a great privilege to work with them.”

The announcement follows a detailed review of the Eve portfolio by Haymarket, which led the company to conclude that as matters stand it is not feasible to continue the magazine.

This morning (4 Sept) Costello met with affected staff to inform them of the possible closure, that they are now at risk of redundancy and are formally entering a period of consultation. During this time, the management will explore ideas put forward by affected staff to lessen the impact of closing Eve.

Unaffected by the announcement is evecars.com, the future branding of which is under review. Eve licensees have also been informed and are developing local plans as appropriate to address these potential changes.

Out of respect to the employees affected by this announcement, Haymarket is declining further comment during the consultation period, which is expected to conclude some time in October.

None of the company’s other titles are at risk of closure.

IPC - Loaded & NME Shortlisted

insideipcmedia_e_ffb55c860475456f80c97d9986d6a956.jpg

UK: Two IPC Media titles – NME and Loaded – are in contention to be crowned 'the UK's favourite cover' in a major national poll.

The 16-strong shortlist for the Great Cover Debate – which is a central element of this year's Magazine Week, organised by the PPA – has been generating significant media interest.

A host of UK magazine editors – including a number from IPC Media – nominated their favourite iconic covers to form a long list for the Great Cover Debate. Two months ago, a panel of expert judges, sifted through 11 decades of famous magazine covers to decide on a final shortlist of 16, and now the poll is open to a public vote.

NME's controversial naked Beth Ditto cover from June 2007 was selected for its attitude, impact, humour, relevance and courage. NME editor Conor McNicholas says: "It was genuinely the most talked about cover of the year. We had, in one fell swoop done that magical thing that magazines can do, which is create an international, cultural event."

Loaded's classic Kevin Keegan cover from April 1996 was nominated as one of the great 'poster' covers that put Loaded at the heart of the mid-90s men's mag explosion. Current Loaded editor Martin Daubney says: “It embodies the spirit of Loaded – if you won't make a joke, we'll do it for you – it's a stroke of genius.”

IPC Ignite managing director Eric Fuller adds: “I'm delighted that the outstanding quality of our creative teams has once again been recognised. Both Ignite covers on the shortlist embody the unique spirit of each magazine, and they deserve their place in such esteemed company.”

A host of IPC Media editors have also provided written and video citations for their own favourites to make the shortlist – including Conor McNicholas - NME, Martin Daubney - Loaded, Andy Cowles – editorial director, Guy Woodward - Decanter, Louise White - Hair, Ali Hall - Look and Catherine Westwood - Wedding.

Voting will continue for the next few weeks, after which the winner – crowned the 'nation's favourite cover' – will be announced during Magazine Week (September 29 - October 5).

Photrade lets photographers control their pictures, get paid for them
Posted by Daniel Terdiman

...In addition, the system allows photographers to track usage of their photos, so that they can determine who is using them. And, if they decide they're not happy with someone specific using a photo, they can block access to that picture. But if that happens, the user gets a note allowing them to ask the photographer for permission. This, of course, is a path to asking for payment for use of the picture....

Photolibrary Represents AGE Fotostock

Photolibrary, the independent global distributor and producer of still and moving imagery, has signed a distribution agreement with AGE Fotostock throughout their office network in the UK, US, Australia, Asia and the Middle East.

Photolibrary has also agreed to provide AGE FotoStock content from its house collections for distribution through AGE’s THP channel partners and AGE FotoStock direct.

Alfonso Gutierrez, General Manager of AGE FotoStock, says, "Nowadays everything is about distribution in our business..."

The AGE FotoStock collection offers over half a million images of high and evocative rights managed imagery which can be browsed, selected, and licensed online at www.photolibrary.com.

The large diversity and high quality of the images found in this latest collection, and the broad range of themes, continue to allow Photolibrary to remain at the forefront of the creatives’ thought process when looking for high end image content.

Glenn Parker, Photolibrary Group CEO, says, "This latest representation agreement illustrates Photolibrary's commitment to representing the very best rights managed imagery available, thus continuing our key offer of creative excellence for users of www.photolibrary.com. Representing the AGE Fotostock collection throughout our global network allows us to keep true to this commitment.

Alfonso Gutierrez, General Manager of AGE FotoStock, says, "Nowadays everything is about distribution in our business. Pricing is related to the level of the offer in any market or industry and therefore somewhat unpredictable. However, while distribution is key in any business it is especially important in stock photography. The more people that see your images, the more possibilities you have to sell them at market price. This agreement with the excellent distribution network of Photolibrary achieves our goal of increasing the visibility of our images to many more clients still and in many more countries around the world as well.”

Exhibition: Best of British

PA.jpg

Monday sees the opening of the Best of British photography exhibition, charting over a century of life in the UK, displayed throughout recently refurbished St Pancras International station,London.

The exhibition, to mark the 140th anniversary of both Press Association and St Pancras, runs between 8 – 26 September with the photographs displayed throughout the station.

The new photographic exhibition will offer people a unique chance to view rarely seen images that celebrate all that puts the ‘Great’ in Great Britain. The ‘Best of British’ exhibition, opening at St Pancras International, presents over a century of photography especially selected from the Press Association’s archives, with many of the images not seen since their first publication decades ago.

The exhibition, which runs between 8 – 26 September, showcases key moments and heroes from British history but often from different or quirky angles. Many will draw a smile, or tell a story, they may even include familiar faces or places - but most have rarely been seen in public before now.

40 photographs have been selected from the Press Association’s archives of more than seven million images. The exhibition, showing Britain across three centuries, marks the 140th anniversary of both the Press Association and St Pancras station this year.

The photographs will be displayed throughout the station, offering visitors and travellers a fascinating glimpse at some of the defining moments of British history. Whether catching a train, doing a spot of shopping or meeting friends, the exhibition will be accessible and free for all.

“Working with the team at St Pancras International, we shortlisted an interesting selection of images dating back to 1897. The oldest image on display is a portrait of Queen Victoria at her Diamond Jubilee; the most recent is a photo of her great great great great grandson, Prince Harry! We want visitors to the station to enjoy fabulous images of historical and current events in Britain that they may have seen in their lives,” said Martin Stephens, assistant managing director of PA Photos.

The photographs were taken by some of the agency’s renowned photographers such as John Stillwell, who was the only photographer to accompany Prince Harry on his tour of duty in Afghanistan in March of this year. Other images include iconic figures such as Winston Churchill, Bobby Moore, Twiggy and the Beatles. There are also photographs of the station taken over the years.

Dominique Didinal, marketing manager of St Pancras International, said “Both St Pancras International and the Press Association are part of the history of Britain. Over the years the Press Association has captured moments of pride, sadness, victory - the very fabric of Britain – and St Pancras International is itself a magnificent symbol of great pride, achievement and a feat of Great British engineering. With our shared anniversary this year, the partnership is a fantastic fit to showcase something truly British.”

A series of ten books called ‘20th Century Britain in Pictures’ and published by Ammonite Press accompanies the exhibition. As part of the Press Association’s anniversary celebrations, each book features over 300 photos to chronicle a decade of British life as seen through its archive. The series will be available in all major bookshops in the autumn and can be pre-ordered from Foyles in St Pancras International.

Mary Evans Launches Castle Howard Collection

maryevanscastle.jpg

Mary Evans Picture Library, a source of historical images, launches its newest collaboration - exclusive worldwide representation of the magnificent collection of Castle Howard in Yorkshire.
"Castle Howard is not only a landmark synonymous with history, art and culture," says Paul Brown, Managing Director of Mary Evans, "but it is also one familiar to many because of its continuing association with "Brideshead Revisited". With a new feature film out this autumn we're sure that Castle Howard will be in the spotlight once more."

One of Britain's finest and best-loved stately homes, Castle Howard, known to film buffs as the fictional Brideshead in Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited", was built for Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle between 1699 and 1712.

Designed by John Vanburgh, later the architect of Blenheim Palace, and assisted by the experienced Nicholas Hawksmoor, Castle Howard was the first private house in England to be endowed with a grand dome which crowns the lavish Baroque structure. The grounds are equally impressive with formal gardens, woodland, fountains and lakes setting off two further major buildings; the Temple of the Four Winds, and the Mausoleum built by Hawksmoor in which the 3rd Earl is interred.

The collection, which is being scanned and photographed by Mary Evans on an ongoing basis, includes treasures from this Yorkshire landmark's superb interior and archive. The core of the picture collection was built up by the 3rd, 4th and 5th Earls during the 18th century, notably during their travels in Italy on the Grand Tour. Although some of the works were later sold, or destroyed by fire in 1940, valuable later additions were made by George, 9th Earl of Carlisle, the last with this title to live at Castle Howard. A great patron of the arts, and an accomplished painter himself, he forged friendships with some of the greatest of the Victorian artists and it is due to his legacy that works by Frederick, Lord Leighton, G.F. Watts and Walter Crane number among Castle Howard's numerous treasures. They join 18th century satirical cartoons, architectural drawings and hand-coloured engravings of birds and wildlife while other notable pieces include paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Rubens, Canaletto and Holbein (including an outstanding painting of King Henry VIII by the latter) which adorn the walls of Castle Howard.

Paul Brown continued ".....As a picture library, we're particularly proud to be working behind the scenes to bring this prestigious but relatively undiscovered collection to light, and in the process offer our clients such a superb, historically significant set of pictures."

The full range of images from the Castle Howard Collection can be viewed at www.maryevans.com and more information about Castle Howard can be found at www.castlehoward.co.uk.
