Music & arts picture library Lebrecht is now representing the Maurice Seymour Estate.
Photographer Maurice Seymour worked from the mid-1930s until the 1970s photographing performers who worked in the nightclubs and theatres of Chicago.
Seymour was born in Russia and together with his brother was apprenticed to a photographer. Later on the two brothers set up in business together. When the ballet Russe de Monte Carlo came to Chicago he was chosen to photograph them and these photos are well known worldwide for their distinctive style and lighting. This was his first ballet assignment and it remained the focus of much of his work. When you look at these examples the images will be immediately familiar to you, although you may not have always read the name of the photographer. Search on our website for more examples of his unique work which is all in copyright.

Wanderlust's 100th Issue
Wanderlust magazine celebrates its 100th issue and 15th anniversary with the publication of the December issue featuring 100 of travel's best secrets.
The magazine is marking the occasion with a feature on 100 of travel’s best secrets, along with features from the likes of Bill Bryson and comic writer and actor Michael Palin.
Haymarket Consumer Media, which acquired a stake in Wanderlust earlier this month, joins two other private investors, John Brown and Mark Ellingham in backing the magazine. However, the majority of the business will still be owned by Lyn Hughes, the editor-in-chief and publisher, who founded the company with her late husband Paul Morrison in 1993.
Will the recession affect which images companies choose to represent their organisations?
Dwyer O’Neill, CEO of Reflex Stock believes the answer is yes and is responding by compiling a new series of images that reflects an emerging trend. “In recent weeks, we have seen a reduction in requests for youth based stock photography and an increasing demand for images depicting maturity, wisdom and self-reliance."
“As the recession deepens, my feeling is that businesses, particularly those within the financial sector, will continue to look for images that illustrate maturity, level headedness and wisdom to represent their organisation"
Joanne Tunwell, Head of Picture Research, Reflex Stock adds: "Organisations need to reflect the developments in the changed economy and are looking for new imagery to help them do this. Our latest image collections brought together to satisfy this demand....."

The Arrival of Captain Ridley's Shooting Party at Bletchley park
Bletchley Park has created a print store to sell limited edition commemorative fine art prints. Bletchley Park was the home of the World War 2 Codebreakers and the prints have been signed by five of the surviving Codebreakers.
As part of its fund raising initiative to regenerate Bletchley Park, the Bletchley Park Trust is making available a collection of limited edition, fine art prints signed by five of the original World War 2 Codebreakers.
To view click here
These attractive framed prints are being issued to commemorate the phenomenal technological achievements of the Codebreakers that both helped shorten the war by two years and laid the foundations for modern day computing. The proceeds from the sale of these prints will make a direct and vital contribution to the continuing work to restore and regenerate Bletchley Park.
Some pictures have previously been unavailable to the public; these historic pictures of Bletchley Park’s wartime codebreaking work are made even rarer by the fact that cameras were not allowed on-site during the war. They are being reproduced in partnership with CreateOnline, the Bletchley Park based, fine art prints company that looks after the online printing for National Geographic, Punch Magazine Library and many other galleries.
Signed by five of the surviving Codebreakers: John Herivel, Keith Batey, Mavis Batey, Oliver Lawn and Sheila Lawn, the strictly limited edition, framed prints are supplied with a certificate of authenticity from the Bletchley Park Trust and are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
Simon Greenish, Chief Executive of the Bletchley Park Trust welcomed the initiative, saying: “These prints offer an opportunity to buy a unique piece of history and will help to ensure that the legacy of the wartime Codebreakers at the home of computing is not forgotten. As well as being an exclusive and attractive historic portrait of the work conducted here in WWII, I hope they will prove to be a valuable investment for their owners”.
A spokesman for CreateOnline said: ”We are delighted and honoured to be working on this project to commemorate the work of the Codebreakers and helping to support Bletchley Park”.

The Travel Library, with over 34,000 existing images on-line, have added a set of pictures by railway photographer Don Bishop showing many of the preserved steam railways throughout the UK.
Many of the images show the spectacular sight and capture the power of magnificent locomotives from a bygone era steaming through the British landscape. The images will appeal to Calendar, Greeting Cards clients & publishing companies catering to the railway enthusiast fraternity.
TTL Managing Director Philip Enticknap said “I admit to being a bit of a steam buff myself and had been looking for a photographer to supply us with images to represent the UK tourist railway scene for some time. When I saw Don Bishops images in a specialist steam magazine I knew that his work was right for us and approached him to contribute to the library.”
This sector of the leisure industry attracts over 6 million visitors a year to over one hundred heritage railway sites nationwide and the images are being well received by TTL’s UK travel industry clients.
The collection will complement the library’s growing collection of over 8000 British images, featuring the work of well known UK landscape photographers including David Noton, Adam Burton, Rod Edwards, and Tom Mackie who together provide a wide portfolio of scenic landscapes, dramatic coastlines, cities and villages.
TTL also represents the work of veteran and much respected photographer Andy Williams who has spent a lifetime’s career capturing and constantly updating his extensive photographic coverage of the UK. His images show timeless landscapes from the Scottish Highlands to sleepy Cornish fishing villages, castles, cottages, pubs, gardens, cathedrals, churches, architecture and famous landmarks as well as many subjects that make up the British scene.
Philip Enticknap added “At TTL we are perceived as being a supplier of exotic location images from around the world, which is perfectly true. However the UK tourist industry also requires stunning imagery when it comes to promoting itself. With our specialist knowledge of the travel marketplace we are able to apply our expertise to both the home and overseas markets.”
As the effects of the downturn in the economy may deter overseas travel, UK tourism is likely to increase and The Travel Library is well prepared to meet the demand for any images of Britain that this may bring.

Over 800 buyers attended the annual Picturehouse event held on 29 October this year in New York.
Press Release:
The annual Picturehouse event, held this year at the Altman Building on October 29, was a huge success. A record number of buyer attendees, over 800, visited with one hundred plus photo agencies and suppliers from around the globe.
Representing an almost 25% increase in attendance over 2007, the clients were a virtual cross section of the industry. 32% were advertising and graphic design, 19% magazines and newspapers, 17% book publishing and 32% from new media, travel and other sectors.
Said a first time attendee from McCann Erickson, “everyone was so friendly and helpful. I enjoyed making that personal connection with people I work with over the phone and through email. I had a great time, met a lot of new people and made some great connections.”
Deborah Free, President of Picturehouse Marketing, says this year’s audience growth shows that the event is gaining momentum within the photo industry and creative community. In its eighth year, Picturehouse is the only forum bringing together photo suppliers with buyers, exclusively.
Picturehouse NY 2009 is slated for October 14, 2009 and will take place at a new venue, the Metropolitan Pavilion. Picturehouse Chicago, the next scheduled event, will be at the River East Art Center on April 16, 2009.

Both HarperCollins and Dow Jones & Company, which publishes The Wall Street Journal, are owned by News Corp.
The program will be overseen by Steve Ross, group president of the Collins Group, a division of Harper Collins, and Alan Murray, deputy managing editor at The Wall Street Journal, in conjunction with the Publishers and editorial teams from the Collins, Collins Business, Collins Living and Collins Design imprints.
“This is an example of the many natural synergies that can be developed between Dow Jones and other News Corp properties,” said Les Hinton, chief executive officer of Dow Jones & Company and publisher of The Wall Street Journal. “We look forward to a fruitful relationship with our corporate brethren at HarperCollins.”
“Readers seeking authoritative and timely business-related content know that The Wall Street Journal is the pre-eminent consumer brand in the world,” said Brian Murray, president and CEO of HarperCollins Publishers. “Through this partnership we will build a branded list of guides from the editors of the Journal and enduring narratives from The Wall Street Journal reporters that will stand the test of time.”

They are a perfect match for the Collins Group,” said Ross. “We look forward to developing must read books authored by some of the most respected names in journalism.”
“We needed to find the world’s pre-eminent publisher and, fortunately, that publisher was very close to home," said Robert Thomson, managing editor of The Wall Street Journal and editor-in-chief of Dow Jones. “The demand for intelligent and insightful books on business and beyond has rarely been greater, and there is no doubt that the journalists at the Journal and Dow Jones generally are far more intelligent and measurably more insightful than journalists at other newspapers.”
The first guidebook to be published under the agreement will be “The Wall Street Journal Guide to the End of Wall Street As We Know It: What You Need to Know About the Greatest Financial Crisis of Our Time – And How to Survive It,” by Dave Kansas. The book is a definitive guide for Main Street readers who want to make sense of what’s happening on Wall Street. It will be published by Collins Business in January 2009. Haymarket’s US-based motorsports monthly, RACER, celebrates its 200th issue with an examination of racing’s past, present and future.
Press Release:
For its ‘bicentenary’, the December issue includes a special ‘200’ section. In it, RACER’s respected team of writers and editors celebrates and analyses its first 16 years. They recall their favourite moments, look at how racing has evolved since the first issue in April, 1992, and predict what they want to see happen in motorsport’s future.
Continuing the theme, the 200th RACER also looks at how the classic Michael Andretti and Bobby Rahal battles in Indy car racing have led to their sons Marco and Graham slugging it out in the same series, and asks whether 200mph – once the definitive marker for being seriously fast – is still such a big deal.
“It’s been a privilege to be working on the magazine for such an auspicious occasion,” said RACER editor David Malsher. “I know we have the best team of motorsport writers in North America, and our photographers are second-to-none, so RACER is a pleasure to put together every month. But this particular issue was even more fun, especially compiling the feature on the 100 things we want to see in motorsport’s future, which has triggered a load of response from our readers.”
President and publisher of Haymarket Network USA, Ian Havard, said that the RACER team has been “pleased and also very humbled by the goodwill, warmth and praise” coming from some of racing’s big names. “It’s hugely gratifying to know we mean so much to these guys,” he said, adding that “I look forward to the next 200” has been the common sentiment among congratulations messages from racing names including Mario Andretti, Jeff Gordon and John Force.
“That’s echoed throughout these offices and among all our contributing writers as we continue to make RACER the essential motorsports monthly,” said Havard.
RACER, which is published from Haymarket’s Irvine, California, office, covers the spectrum of international auto racing from an American perspective, making it unique in Haymarket’s extensive motorsport portfolio.

Three major publishers have called for the adoption of the PLUS (Picture Licensing Universal System) standards by picture archives, photographersand all other image suppliers.
Representatives of McGraw Hill, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Pearson each announced that they will adopt the PLUS Picture Licensing Glossarydefinitions in their contracts, and that they encourage image suppliers to begin embedding PLUS license metadata in all images within one year. The publishers voiced their support at the “PLUS Takes Root in the Publishing Industry” event hosted by the Picture Archive Councilof America, during their International Conference in New York City.
The PLUS standards were developed by the PLUS Coalition, an international non-profit organization dedicated to simplifying and facilitating the communication and management of image rights. In the PLUS Coalition, publishers, picture archives, photographers, illustrators, designers, advertising agencies, museums, libraries, artist representatives, educational institutions, manufacturers and their associations collaboratetoward that shared goal. The PLUS standards allow rights and attribution information totravel within image files in a machine-readable format that provides instant access and universal understanding.
“We are very pleased that these major publishers – the largest image licensees in the industry – are aligned in their support of the PLUS standards,” said Maria Kessler, President of the Picture Archive Association of America.
Bonnie Beacher, Senior Director of Contracts, Copyrights and Permissions at McGraw-HillEducation, said “The PLUS standards benefit publishers and their suppliers by simplifying and clarifying the process of licensing and managing images. We are in the process of implementing PLUS standards, and we would find it very useful for our image suppliers to adopt PLUS standards as well.”

Lewis Hamilton’s recent World Championship success made Formula One front page news – and it was Haymarket photo agencies LAT and Back Page Images (BPI) that provided the photograph.
Steven Tee was in the McLaren racing team’s garage to capture those tense final laps and the moment that Lewis celebrated with girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger.
The situation was also tailor made for BPI, Haymarket’s all-sport photo agency, who promptly utilised their relationship with all the national newspapers to distribute the images that were published on the front page of the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Independent and Daily Mail – just four of 30 separate shows for the photos that day.
Earlier this year, sports specialist BPI joined LAT Photographic, Haymarket Media Group’s motorsport and motoring picture agency and archive, to create a photographic service covering all major international sports.
