So what is the industry standard for keywording?

When that question is raised, the appropriate answer is - in the words of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple - "nobody knows".

Due to it's unregulated do-it-yourself nature, keywording standards have developed to meet the needs of the particular photo or video libraries concerned, rather than as part of an industry-wide standard.
The result is some front runners (notably the so-called Getty standard), but many, many other standards with different sorts of rules and controlled vocabularies, or no set vocabularies at all.

Elephant Magazine Launches

6195.jpg
Elephant: The Art & Visual Culture Magazine

'With over 200 pages of visual content, Elephant aims to have more depth and breadth than any other visual art magazine. It digs deeper, ceaselessly asking and enquiring into creative trends and art movements and innovative techniques. In recent years, creative individuals have started to react against the corporate nature of things, taking initiative into their hands and starting new independent ventures. Elephant looks at how people do that. How do they go about starting a new publishing venture? How do they then move from publishing their own comics to featuring them in national newspapers? How do they turn their personal interests and design skills into hugely popular websites? How do they turn their obsessions into global trends? These questions are particularly relevant as we wake up to this post credit-crunch period. Elephant visits art and design studios, sits by desks, steps on graffiti artists’ toes, disturbs rehearsals and interrupts takes, rides fixed-gear bikes and plays with the latest computer games. The ELEPHANT is always in the room.'

IPC Media To Restructure Around Audience

Evelyn Webster, CEO of IPC Media, announces a new company structure, effective 4 January 2010, organised around three audience groups of men, mass-market women and up-market women.
• IPC Inspire will be the men's division, comprising leisure pursuits, men's lifestyle and music brands, headed by managing director Paul Williams.
• IPC Connect will be the mass-market women's division, comprising women's weeklies, the goodtoknow network and the TV entertainment brands, headed by managing director Fiona Dent.
• IPC Southbank, the up-market women's division, will continue to comprise the fashion, beauty and home interest brands, headed by managing director Jackie Newcombe.

The divisional names IPC TX and IPC Ignite will disappear.

Says Evelyn Webster: “Through our iconic print and online brands, IPC delivers huge, powerful audiences to our clients and business partners. However, while our current structure has served us well over many years, it now no longer fully reflects our clients' business needs. Reach, as well as the delivery of tightly targeted audiences, has never been more important. By organising IPC by consumer audience, rather than by magazine frequency or subject area, we will create a more market-facing structure, which will also bring greater coherence to our operations.”

As well as these changes to the publishing divisions, Charlie Meredith, previously MD of IPC TX, is appointed to a newly created board role of MD, Central Operations, responsible for the majority of central operations including IPC Direct, the direct marketing division; IPC Plus, the syndication and licensing division; Production; and Property/Facilities. Charlie will also be responsible for ensuring that IPC meets its environmental obligations. Charlie will report to Evelyn Webster.

As a result of the restructure, IPC Ignite MD Eric Fuller will be leaving IPC at the end of December. Says Evelyn Webster: “In his nine years with IPC Media, of which three were on the board, Eric has made a huge contribution to the business and we all wish him well.”

Other members of the IPC Media board reporting to Evelyn Webster are: Sylvia Evans, Finance director; Stephen Hirst, managing director, Marketforce; Dee Mair, HR director; and Neil Robinson, Digital director. As well as her role as CEO, Evelyn Webster retains direct responsibility for IPC Advertising.

As a result of this new structure, there will be a reduction in a number of roles and IPC will begin a period of consultation with affected employees from 20 November.

...."In the business of ideas, which is the business that we are in, we do think journalism plays a role, and we do think there are business models there that will make a lot of sense, albeit perhaps not at the scale of some of our broadcasting businesses and other entertainment businesses," he said.
"Is it going to be as big a role? No," he said.

ImageSpan And Digimarc Work Together To Secure Your Images

ImageSpan and Digimarc partner to deliver complete solution to manage, monitor and monetize valuable image assets

'The combined solution enables stock photography agencies, media companies, and museums and archives to communicate copyright ownership, automatically track images online and make more money from new and existing image assets'.

The Press Release
ImageSpan Inc., creator of the market-leading licensing and royalty payment automation platform for all media, and Digimarc Corporation (NASDAQ: DMRC), a leading innovator and technology provider that gives persistent digital identities to all forms of media content, today announced that they have partnered to deliver a complete solution to manage, monitor and monetize valuable image assets. ImageSpan and Digimarc made the announcement at the 6Sight® Future of Imaging conference in Monterey, Calif.

ImageSpan’s LicenseStream automated licensing, publishing and royalty processing platform will be combined with Digimarc for Images, which lets photography agencies, media companies, museums and archives add an imperceptible digital watermark to communicate copyright ownership and information on how to contact the owner wherever the image is found online. The LicenseStream Content Tracker then crawls the Web looking for uniquely watermarked images, providing regular reporting on where a content owner’s images are found so they can take appropriate action.

“Digimarc for Images combined with LicenseStream gives content owners a view into how and where their content is used so they can apply appropriate LicenseStream remedies – automated options to convert non-paying consumers into new revenue opportunities,” said Iain Scholnick, chief executive officer, ImageSpan. “When content is used without permission, content owners can select from several automated remedies – email offer to license the image on the spot, request to provide attribution, a link back to the photographer’s gallery, initiate collections or take down the image. Together, we’re delivering a powerful solution to help speed the pace of transactions, drive Web traffic, and empower content owners to pursue untapped opportunities for maximizing the value of their digital assets.”

The solution optimizes content for search engines before it is published to the Web and then provides the means for any buyer to license that content with a mouse click and with flexible pricing based on use. Since watermarks can be unique to various instances of the same image, content owners have the flexibility to set licensing terms depending on the specific usage and buyer.
The Content Tracker continuously monitors billions of images on the Web to locate a customer’s digitally watermarked images. In addition to the standard search, the solution offers a directed search option that lets a content owner specify Web sites to be monitored regularly. Search reports include thumbnails of the images found with the URLs of the websites where they were located. Reports are automatically sent out each month. Alternatively, content owners can generate their own reports at any time.

“LicenseStream and Digimarc for Images give content owners an extra layer of protection by communicating their copyright ownership and helping to monetize their content more efficiently and effectively,” said Jeri Owen, Digimarc vice president. “Digimarc is pleased to work with ImageSpan to deliver the services our customers need to address the problem of managing and tracking images once they are posted on the Web, while also giving them automated services to identify, create and drive more sales opportunities with the joint solution’s remedy tools.”

About ImageSpan

ImageSpan is the creator of LicenseStream, the market-leading licensing and royalty payment automation platform for all media types and businesses, from individual creators to enterprises. LicenseStream makes content intelligent, so it moves freely across the Web with defined ownership, rights and restrictions, enabling pricing based on use. By making content intelligent, LicenseStream creates new efficiencies and frees resources to develop new distribution and marketing channels to drive incremental revenues. Enterprise partners using the ImageSpan platform include Omnicom, Visible World and online advertising agencies. ImageSpan offers a number of delivery options including deployment through Adobe software. Founded in 2003 and based in Sausalito, California, ImageSpan is the exclusive provider of license registry services to the PLUS Coalition, the international, multi-industry standards body for image licensing. For more information, please go to www.imagespan.com or call (888) 921-1221.
About Digimarc

Digimarc Corporation (NASDAQ:DMRC), based in Beaverton, Oregon, is a provider of enabling technologies that create digital identities for all forms of media and many everyday objects that are imperceptible to humans, but not to computers. These technologies help computers to better process sensory data as the industry evolves toward more intuitive pervasive computing. Aurora photographer Michael Hanson’s photographs of vacation spots in Belize have been featured in the October issue of Coastal Living Magazine. The underlying story in this travel article was a ‘his’ and ‘hers’ vacation to the Caribbean where a couple can combine soft adventure with luxuries and empty beaches. Hanson shot two locations off mainland Belize - one focused more on soft adventures centered around an ecolodge, and the other was a more posh, luxury resort.

Alamy - 3rd Q Results

3rd Quarter Results are in from Alamy.

'Q3 2009 results will reflect what we hope is the bottom of the downturn. It's too early to predict what Q4 will look like, but I can say that September and October numbers have been very reassuring. Until we have more data, however, we're sticking with our earlier forecast of a 15%-20% decrease on 2008.
We're working on some exciting investments for 2010, which include further expansion of direct sales teams, some great new search features for customers, new products, new markets, and a faster service (we'll have more to say about all this later).' - James West - Alamy CEO
