Training: V&A – Photography Collections Curators’ Training Programme

VAPhotoCuratorsOnPAN
Background
Art photography collections are held at regional museums, libraries and archives across the country but often without specialist curatorial expertise. Peer support for curators working with photography collections is limited. There is currently no Subject Specialist Network for Photography, and no active planning, programming, research, information exchange, scholarship or training that is more formally coordinated between UK institutions. As a result, many photography collections tend to be ‘dormant’ and inaccessible to experts and audiences, and curators responsible for photography collections do not have access to the necessary staffing and financial resources, or knowledge and specialist skills to actively develop their collections. With the support of the Art Fund, the Victoria and Albert Museum is running a two-year pilot programme to help support the development of curatorial expertise in art photography, working with regional museum partners.

Now online: Retrograph picture library – 100 years of classic graphic design

RetrographOnPAN
The UK based Retrograph collection of classic graphic design images is now available online
Spanning 100 years of retrospective publicity work dating from the mid eighteen hundreds to the middle of the twentieth century, all available from their direct download site.

Retrograph was first established some 25 years ago by Jilliana and Martin Breese and is a picture library that extensively specialises in publicity designs that have been created by commercial artists throughout the past one hundred and fifty years. It is a unique collection of designs that promote products, services, events and occasions and these images have been recorded photographically from the original prints, still retaining the qualities of the variety of printed methods that were used in their reproduction.
They say: The collection features some of the greatest and finest and most colourful examples of these artists’ work and the images also reflect all of the art movements that became popular throughout the 20th century.
Although the Retrograph collection was a most popular source of images for publishers, designers and other industries over the years the library ceased offering the work a few years ago when it became a standard for the images to be digitised for ease of access by clients wishing to obtain them. We at Retrograph have been working on the library images, digitising the collection over the past two years or more and so far there are around 2,500 available that are shown in 72 categories on our new website (www.retrograph.com). This is just a start to this important collection as there are still many thousands of images in the pipeline ready for digitisation that we are working on or preparing to work on.
We are producing new sections and uploading new images to our site on an ongoing basis and eventually we aim to have many more thousands of images for you to choose from on our website.’

This image and request in from Tom an Assistant Producer at a London Film production company:

Dear Will,
I hope this email finds you well.
It’s been recommended I contact you by Suzy at TopFoto, as we are trying to track down a photographer, the details of which are as follows:
We are looking to use a photograph that was published in “Town” magazine, in 1962.
It is a photograph of artist David Hockney standing next to his painting “Life Drawing for a Diploma”.
We found the article in the British Library in order to find the photographer (see attached for scan).
Unfortunately he/she is just listed as “Smedley”.
I wondered if you could offer me some advice on how to best go about finding out exactly who this is and clearing the photo accordingly?

Do you happen to have a database of photographers that would might be able to have a quick search in on my behalf?
Any help you could provide us on this would be hugely appreciated.

• If you Are or Represent Smedley please contact [email protected] and I will pass your details on.
• UPDATE: Tom is working with the Hockney estate (thanks Julia at Laurence King for their details) but still requires clearance on this image from the photographer.
